It took me a while to get into this book, partly because a similar book about a religious order exploring another planet was much more engaging from the start (Anathem by Neal Stephenson). Once I hit page 100 though, I started realizing how deeply I was caring for this cast of characters. This is a fascinating science fiction book about a Jesuit mission to a distant star. The characters are wonderful and well written, and the story is a mystery told in three strands (before the trip, during the trip, and after the trip) which overlap. The dialog is very funny, but there is some smart humor you may have to read a couple times to figure out.
