This was the June pick for the Sword and Laser book club, a tribute of sorts to our group member Joanna, who passed away when she had this book on her "currently reading" list. I decided to give it a try, not expecting to really like it, but I was wrong. I read the entire thing in one day, since I had to stay up late with the dogs on a night full of fireworks.

Both a convincing tale of rural life and a believable tale of the fantastic. I could not put it down.

A fast, enjoyable read. The best aspect of this book was the unique setting. Bledsoe also does a nice job of slowly revealing the fantasy aspects of the book and Bronwyn is a fascinating heroine. There isn't a lot of substance to it, though. The plot is thin and the romance unbelievable. I would enjoy reading the sequels but they aren't going to the top of my reading list. ...more
