I read the first 30 pages of this several weeks ago, and read the last 350 in one night so I could talk about it on the podcast the next day (so stay tuned for that longer discussion!) Miller's writing pulls me through, it's so sensory, including smells. The way she uses metaphor doesn't make me gag, and there are these moments where all of the sudden these philosophical comments happen and I'd have to stop a second. I enjoyed the myths from Circe's point of view, and going along the thought exp ...more

Madeline Miller creates a fully fleshed-out first-person voice for Circe, bringing us into well-known myths and incidents from The Odyssey from her vantage point. 6 out of 5 stars. A masterpiece. I listened to the audiobook read by Perdita Weeks, and it was perfection. Miller is a genius who brings the myth to life, rounds it out, and delivers a riveting story. I can't praise this enough, and I look forward to reading her first Homeric book, The Song of Achilles. ...more

I read this book in an effort to branch into a new genre. I thought it was very well done but have decided Greek Mythology is not for me.
