I read this in high school, and it was one of my favorite's at the time. I just re-read it as the movie is out, and was glad to see it's still one of my favorites. Ender is pretty much just badass. The military strategy and leadership is actually one of my favorite things about this book.
The notion that Ender was set apart from the other kids as an intentional tactic to make him into a leader was always fascinating to me. In many ways I can relate to it. Ender's story is one of leadership, and ...more

I finished the entire novel in two sittings, and would have finished it in one if I didn't have a job.
It's an excellent book from an author I grew to respect from reading his website before ever having read any of his novels. This is only the first I have read by OSC, but it will not be the last.
Sidenote: This is his website. He has a ton of advice for aspiring writers there, and he also reviews/praises Serenity, saying "I'm not going to say it's the best science fiction movie, ever. Oh, wait. ...more

Reading of this book is a coming-of-age right for almost any child, and especially those who don't, in fact, feel like children.
The most powerful thing about Card's Ender Saga is that he treats the children as seriously and rigorously as he would treat adult characters. This is more common now, but it's still rare to find it done so well.
This story, which features only a very few adults, focuses on exceptionally intelligent children who are trained to fight a war. But the fascinating aspects of ...more

Certain bits are a little hard to swallow, like a child being the saviour of the world, but it's still a tremendously engaging SF novel with a stunning, surprising finale.

This is really 4.5 stars. It was excellent. But I don't feel like it is really over, but that is okay since this is only one of 6 total novels. I'm looking forward to number 2. Kind of disappointed because I was able to figure out what was going on before the revealed it at the end. That is why it gets dinged .5 a star.

Card always had good story, but great insight into the minds of characters. Made you feel smarter seeing into the mind of a supposed child genius and moral being. Various movie producers keep trying to make this book into a movie only to have the project fall apart. It will be very hard to adapt....
