What Members Thought

Jenny (Reading Envy)
I kept hearing this novel described as "lesbian necromancers in space." That isn't inaccurate but space is a backdrop and necromancy is central. There is also a locked-room murder mystery, houses with a contest between necromancers, and one unforgettable kick-ass heroine named Gideon. Oh and it is funny and pithy. If you need a book to mix it up or break up reading ennui, this is probably the one! It would make a great videogame too. ...more

This was just not for me. I should have paid more attention to the cover and to the "horror" tags.

You're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but I should have and steered clear. I can totally see what people love about it, but it was just too macabre for me. It gave me nightmares.

It is a very well done and engrossing book with great characters. It's just going to have to go into the file with Jeff VanderMeer's stuff headed, "Cool Things That Lots of People Love That I Just Can't Handle

I picked this up because it was supposed to be all the rage, running rampant along the podcasting hallways of our zeitgeist.

Also, I heard it was funny.

But what the goddamn hell was this? This book read like an Agatha Christie fan wrote a book where MTV and Game of Thrones had a foursome with a teen slasher flick and Survivor. It has no world building, just random trudging through various hallways, sniffy teenagers, annoying self-indulgence and vague whispering in the shadows. And some skeletons.

Ugh. I really, really wanted to like this one. I mean, lesbian necromancer's in space is a pretty gripping descriptor!

I want to say that it wasn't the story, necessarily, that I struggled with in this book. I think, had some changes been made, it would have been super gripping and I would have shouted the five stars. My problem was I was SO CONFUSED all of the time. It seemed like every character had, at minimum, three different names and they were all used so haphazardly with there being so man

Wow. A weird mashup of fantasy (magic) and science fiction... 98% fantasy. OK, it's magicians in space. Which, somehow, is not at all what I expected coming in. Some might also call it horror, which I'm not a huge fan of, but since it didn't really detract from my enjoyment, I'm going to declare it "not horror enough to worry about". I'm going to read Harrow the Ninth because I was able to wrap my brain around what was happening enough to want to know more, and now that I've figured out Tamsyn M ...more
