I "read" this as an audiobook, and I was pretty happy with it. As with any built world with strange names, titles/roles, and miscellaneous quotes and snippets that start each chapter, it's sometimes hard to keep it all straight while listening, but it was clear enough I has able to keep track, understand, and enjoy. That said, I would have had a deeper understanding, and perhaps more enjoyment, if I'd read it.

I thought about giving this 4 stars since I quite enjoyed it but in the end I didn't love love it, so 3 stars it is. I liked that Mahit was a strong woman who could deal with all the various situations that were thrown at her. Some of the names in the book are annoyingly hard to figure out how to pronounce. I'd skim over most of the big ones. I'm interested to see what the second book will hold. ...more

UPDATE: I keep thinking about this book, even though I finished it weeks ago. I'm pretty sure I missed something in it, and I will be rereading it at some point soon. If a book genuinely wasn't my cup of tea, I shouldn't be thinking about it this much. Maybe my reading brain has been compromised by the weird end-times thing we've got going on. Anyway, consider this rating EXTREMELY provisional.

Actual rating would be 3.5 stars. I loved the world, but I found the characters a series of hard nuts

Great worldbuilding, compelling characters. Thankfully a complete story on its own, though there are plenty of tantalizing hooks for the next book in the series.
