What Members Thought

This is the September Sword and Laser pick - I can't always read the picks in the right month but really like to do so when I can!
I don't have much time for audio these days but couldn't resist January LaVoy reading a book about a character named January. This is about a girl who discovers a door, and the stories move backwards and forwards from there. It has imaginary worlds, secret societies, special abilities, danger, and romance, so it's pretty much the escape we all need.

A book full of heart and cleverness, about the love of stories and why we escape into them. If you like Cornelia Funke's Inkheart, then you owe this book to yourself.

I wanted this book to be as amazing as the cover is beautiful, and parts of it were really good, but my general overall feeling was more ambivalent. The idea of doors to other worlds is cool, but it was just not executed as thoroughly as I would've liked. Sigh. It's not a bad book. I was entertained. It just wasn't amazing.

I was worried this was going to be too forced or self-conscious because of the title. But, in fact, it was awesome. I loved the characters, especially Bad the Dog ((view spoiler) . I enjoyed the whole book and the way it explored agency and destiny. It's the kind of book that snatches your attention and doesn't give it back until you've finished the last page. Highly recommended.
