This month's Sword and Laser pick is a YA novel about Eli, an Apache teen who has a passed down ability to call up the dead. When her cousin dies, he visits her in a dream and tells her that he was murdered. From ghost dogs to a different take on vampires, the novel is full of interesting beings and the ethical ramifications of supernatural gifts.

I loved this book. I got to read it as a part of my teen librarian group's Tournament of Books, and for those interested, here's the link to the review of it, pitted again another excellent YA novel, The Extraordinaries by one of my personal favorite authors, TJ Klune. A fun murder mystery/fantasy. The style took a little getting used to; it felt like things were being set up where there would be a tough decision, and instead it was just obvious to the character what to do. And I think this was a deliberate choice and it was pleasing to me; I'd be skating along in the YA story figuring I knew where all the beats were but I get getting bumped a bit, like in a sled going down a hill.
