This month's Sword and Laser pick is a YA novel about Eli, an Apache teen who has a passed down ability to call up the dead. When her cousin dies, he visits her in a dream and tells her that he was murdered. From ghost dogs to a different take on vampires, the novel is full of interesting beings and the ethical ramifications of supernatural gifts.

I think there are some unique takes here and it ended up on a lot of 2020 lists. The end is pretty epic!

I loved this book. I got to read it as a part of my teen librarian group's Tournament of Books, and for those interested, here's the link to the review of it, pitted again another excellent YA novel, The Extraordinaries by one of my personal favorite authors, TJ Klune. (Some spoilers for both books in the discussion.)

The book even lampshaded this once -- the villain was like "What, you object to ...more

Loved it!

Lipan Apache asexual protagonist has to use her powers to work with the dead to solve the murder of her cousin, with the help of her friends and family. Also, there are ghost dogs, ghost trilobites, ghost mammoths...

Excellent book about ghosts, Indigenous people and land, vampires, and greed. I loved all the characters and the magic.
