Technically I think I'd give this 3.5 stars, and I don't really want to rate it until I've tried another Culture novel. That's a good sign, right? At least I'm not saying I won't read another one.
The good bits: I never quite know what is going on. I've heard Banks writes this way as a puzzle for the reader. So not knowing what will happen and not being sure of the characters, particularly since some of them are Changers, is intriguing. I love the development of the various cultures, even the hor ...more

What a delightfully strange and entertaining book. The chapter where he was stuck on the dessert island was just so bizarre and yet gripping and that describes a lot of the sections of this book!
I loved seeing how the Minds fit into culture as AGI's, but oddly the book didn't go much into how they worked or interacted as much as I would have liked. It was a lot more about the Idirans vs the Culture, which was also entertaining but in a different way. ...more
