What Members Thought

This is the December pick for Sword and Laser and has magic in the form of family curses, living stars, and generations of a family coming together to witness the... death (?) of the matriarch. The author was born in Ecuador and the story is very much nestled inside Ecuadorian places, names, and traditions (it reminds me of the time my book club read The Potbellied Virgin because of me, but that had more Catholic stuff in it.)

I loved the language -- lush and evocative, and then suddenly modern and staccato. Cordova is really good at summing up years in a few pages, and then focussing in again so we live the moments with the characters. There were some villains, big and small, but mostly people trying to do the best they can. I do wish I could see some of Rey's paintings, and my body horror at the idea of plants growing from my body probably made some stuff seem awful when it was meant to be more romantic. I liked the

I loved this book. Loved, loved, loved.
There is so much magic in this story. One of the things I've loved to do over the years is read stories with fantasy/magic elements that aren't based in a traditional euro-western based. This hit the mark for me. I loved the connection between all living things (non-human animal, plants, earth, stars) and the Montoya family. I loved how "different" was something special.
