I read this entranced for an afternoon. At barely over a hundred pages, it is an exceptional work of voice, both in monologue passages and in highly descriptive dialogged. I found myself slipping along its paragraphs, unable to escape the pull. It has very little story; it’s about the encounter of some lower-class folks with a would-be empress. Cool history of a fantasy world (China-ish?), with mammoths although we barely see them here. But there is a cool background (monks, fancy talking animals, royal people uniting kingdoms and double crossing each other) and a satisfying frame around the history story.
