This was a fantastic read..it starts with a man visiting the Arctic to see where his scientist daughter died, all because a virus that the melting polar ice has revealed. From there the story moves through new characters and pieces in a global virus situation. Many of the characters are Japanese American or even just Japanese, many are scientists deep in the thick of working on aspects of the virus, but there are other characters that come up as well. A powerful novel that jumps along the timeline of a bizarre pandemic to show us many of the different faces of grief and loss. A mysterious plague is mutating people's organs, such that your heart and lungs clog with brain cells. The most surprising part is the amount of time that passes between chapters, and sometimes the wildness of the pivots, as a new point-of-view can completely recontextualize everything you've read up until now. There are a few exceptional chapters in this novel about a plague-struck world, particularly chapter 2, where sick children are brought to ride a rollercoaster that kills them. However, the latter chapters are not so memorable and start to get a little repetitious. It doesn't quite nail the landing but is still a memorable listen.
