I listened to this after it won the Hugo award--it would not have been my pick (I really liked Translation State) It starts off difficult to get into, from its initial trigger warnings of unpc attitudes followed immediately by those attitudes; but it does get more interesting towards the end. The main character is really good at ignoring things she doesn't want to notice, which gets lampshaded by other characters, resulting in a fairly unreliable (and not always likeable) protagonist. Not really for me. I should probably have bailed after || Kyr is assigned to be raped and make babies in the burley || because even though she is a thoroughly unpleasant person no one deserves that. I tried to have sympathy because she was raised to believe all these terrible things, except everyone around her sees past the propaganda at least a little. And then she gets more chances, but she is still unlikable. And the ending is just silly.

A circuitous exploration through multiple potential pocket universes seeking change. Kyr experiments with different ways of affecting the future by failing miserably. As she experiences life, she learns more about what it takes to be a good leader and person - largely from being deficient at either. Her lessons along the way are devastatingly honest and believable. I laughed out loud in places. A good read.

This one kept me on my toes. It was a big idea dystopia combined with a puzzle novel. Smart, if a bit heavy handed and flat in its characterization at times. Lots of fun.
