Definitely an interesting concept but Mieville was too caught up in also trying to write a crime novel to flesh it out as much as I would have liked. Some of the grammar in the dialogue makes me feel like I'm just reading typos, and the flow isn't really there.
I love the concept of having to constantly unsee things in the other city, it makes you wonder how much control a government can have, in the end. I would have liked to see much more exploration of Breach and all the implications it has. ...more

Brilliant! I think the world in this book is pure genius. I love reading books that are unique and make my mind whirl. On the surface this book is a murder mystery, but don't hold that against it. There's so much more to this book than just a simple murder mystery. I'm not going to say anything about the story because I think it made it that much cooler that I didn't know about it going into it. Discovering the world as I went along was very exciting. This book confused me. I'm pretty sure it was meant to, but that doesn't help much. I'm confused as to how literally I'm supposed to take the two-city division, I'm confused as to what it symbolizes, I'm confused as to how it works or even got started, and I'm confused as to why I found it so hypnotic.
