Infuriating but readable. Trying desperately to wedge sci fi rationales into an obviously fantasy plot. Chockablock full of casual misogyny and racism. Poorly edited. Deeply emblematic of (and a concise demonstration of some causes of) the male loneliness epidemic. I did enjoy the cat.

For a book I found to be fairly middling, I have a lot of thoughts on it:

The short chapters and quick pacing made for easy reading, but I also saw very little depth to the story (with the exception of Zev's allusions about the intergalactic politics going on behind-the-scenes at the event, which was one of the more interesting parts, and reminded me a bit of the Cabin in the Woods control room).

I liked this more than I expected. Early on, I felt tired of the physically competent, socially awkward hero; but the further in the story went, I enjoyed the side commentary, and the morality of the main character. Humour didn't really land; just went over the top constantly. The audiobook version is great though, and the narrators/readers had fun with it. ...more

Very does-what-it says-on the tin. If you like the look of the tin, that’s what it tastes like. Pretty tin, so I enjoyed it but won’t go on as I think it will be more of the same. If I get a craving for that flavor, I will know where to go.
