What Members Thought

I cracked and finally picked this up. Very enjoyable quick read - couldn't put it down - it was like crack.
I'm a bit bothered by the lack of backstory of how Panem and the Hunger Games come about. It is just kind of explained away in a few paragraphs and we are left to accept this very strange world where teenagers are pitted into an arena each year to kill each other? I was expecting it because I've seen Battle Royale, but I would have appreciated knowing more of the backstory of how the world ...more

Really great, fast-paced, interesting young characters, impossible death-game situation in a post-apocalyptic former USA.

In a scary near future, every year a reality TV show takes place where 12 boys and 12 girls from each of the 12 regions in the country fight to the death in a kill or be killed game. This year 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen steps forward instead of her sister. She doesn't want to see her die, she wants her to live, she wants to live but doesn't reckon her chances as high.

THE HUNGER GAMES by Suzanne Collins was no exception - but within the first few pages that feeling was immediately squashed and, once again, I found myself swept away by the story.
Knowing what was going to happen in the book did not dull the message much at all for me. I remember being horrified my first time through the story and that horror was still there, but a b ...more

It's not very often you find a great YA novel about a dystopian future. It's even more rare when part of the book involves the protagonist killing people. This book had both, and a riveting storyline to boot. I was able to relate to Katniss, although the love triangle felt a little tacked on to appeal to the Twilight crowd.

Got this book as an eBay Daily Deal and honestly don't know why it had to hit the "bargain rack" before I picked it up. Once I did, I couldn't put it down--and that hasn't happened in a good long while. This book is a very quick read and definitely deserving of all the hype. You get brutality (read: lots of gore), romance, action--read it!
