Tried reading this because it was a Sword and Laser pick. Not terrible, and I might have liked it in the end, but I didn't finish by the time the book was due back at the library. I might still try something else by Stross someday. ...more

I didn't like this book through the first third, but after awhile it finally hooked me. Something an the interweaving stories and the pace of the mystery really comes together at that point. ...more

Even had I not already discovered that I loved Stross' way with words I would have wanted to read this book based on its title alone. As someone who spends perhaps far too much time online and plays MMOs I am familiar with Rule 34. For those that may be scratching your head Rule 34 is simply this: if you can think of it, there is porn of it. The culture references in the book may be lost on readers in 10 years, as memes and internet fads do pass, there are many a high school age gamer that has m ...more

An interesting look at a possible future, but I found the shocking elements (much like the Internet memes the narrator refers to) purely for shock value. I did not find myself getting close to any of the characters, so even though the writing was in second person, I felt completely detached.
