While very impressive and another departure from history in the second part, the Al-Andalus/el Cid inspired saga is awesome for the first half, but falters a bit towards the end bu trying to compress too much in too few pages' still a great and emotional read with superb larger than life characters and while I thought the Sarantium duology better, this one was better than Under Heaven

A delightful and surprising read. This was the first of Kay's alternate history fantasy stories that I read, in fact there is no magic in this whatsoever, yet its distinction from actual events places it firmly on the Fantasy shelves.

Easily the best book I've read this year. Beautiful story done by an absolute master. Still can't believe how good it was.
