It seems that I am on a heaven and Hell reading kick. In the last month I have been reading Richard Kadrey's very entertaining Sandman Slim series and when the Sword and Laser forum was introducing the new Tad Williams novel which also, by coincidence, has an angel as it's main character I thought it would be a good comparison.

An urban fantasy with actual Angels and Demons. Written in the style of a detective-noir the main character is a not perfect angel advocate arguing for departed souls to go to heaven. He gets caught up in a after-life threatening conspiracy.
I liked this but it really going to depend on the readers taste. The humour is dry, snarky and puny. If you like modern detective noir you'll probably like this. ...more

It's rare that I read something by an author I've been following for most of my life and come away genuinely surprised. This book was so "different" than what I'd expect from Tad Williams, but in a good way. I've always been a fan, but this immediately became my favorite of his many novels.
