I didn't read this one, but listened to the audiobook. At first it was a bit hard to get into the story - I think reading it would have been a lot easier with this one - as there are quite a lot of characters introduced, and while reading I definitely focus ONLY on the story, and not doing other things besides.
Once I wormed my way into the story (with quite some repeat listening to some scenes) at about 1/4 through I did really enjoy it! I fully plan to continue this series, as it has great cha

I gave up at p 50 *sharp intakes of breath*

After many months of musing on whether I wanted to begin another large-scale fantasy series, I took the Erikson plunge. I was skeptical at first; the plot structure is confusing and unorthodox, and the dialogue seemed forced. It wasn't until I was about halfway through the book that I really understood what was going on. It then became clear that Erikson has a panaromic outlook, and that he's got the imaginative capacity to pull it off. There were some really great characters in this (Kruppe!), ...more

Rich and wonderfully complex, the first installment in the Malazan series was rife with mystery, history, and unanswered questions. There is an amazing amount of depth to this story, and I'm talking hundreds of thousands of years of history. Like in The Lord of the Rings, there is an entire mythology wrapped up in the back story that has radical implications on the plot of this first book. I'm glad Erikson is working on the 10th and final book. It looks like I may be able to read them all straig ...more
