What Members Thought

This books was just what I needed. A compelling story with fully fleshed out characters leading compelling lives. I couldn't put this book down. I almost regret reading it so fast. Like gorging oneself because you didn't know how hungry you were.
As soon as I put the book down I started looking for books on the Biafran War. ...more

This novel is intense. Told from the perspective of three intertwining characters, we meet so many people in the war torn area that it's almost difficult to keep them all straight. It is an interesting and much needed look at the history of the area and how they claimed independence, even if it was just for a short period.

Still processing this book, but it was superbly written and, in spite of its subject matter (Nigerian-Biafrian way of the late 60s) felt so relevant and important. I read Americainah--also by this author--and can emphatically say that Adichie is a major talent and a literary voice that we should all hear.

I read this book during my summer vacation. I loved the way the author shifted the characters that she followed through the books. Their lives were woven together while reflecting individual stories and personalities. I knew almost nothing about Biafra before I read this book and I learned something new about a small, short-lived nation while reading a novel I really enjoyed.
