This novel is perfect ... for someone with a third grade reading level. For an intelligent adult who who seeks well-crafted prose, not so much. The fact that Ms. Diamant's novel is on the NYT bestseller list is pathetic. This account of a Jewish immigrant's life in early twentieth century Boston is rife with inaccuracies, politically correct sensibilities, and just plain bullshit.

I really enjoyed reading The Boston Girl; and didn't want to put it down. I liked that it was in a historical timeline. It read as a diary in a way; that Addie, the grandmother telling her life story to her granddaughter; told of her life as a daughter of an immigrant, from the early 1900's. I kept waiting for the story to shift to present life; as to hear her granddaughter's voice (for her granddaughter to begin her narrative); but it ended cute in that the grandmother was asking to go to New M ...more

Really liked it. Quick read. I'm always drawn to historical fiction, but liked how this wasn't about a particular event or occurrence. Rather, it was a more general story about the main character's life through her teenage years and young adulthood. I liked how it incorporated many "events" that I knew a little bit about (the great influenza outbreak, prohibition, women's rights, child labor, etc.) into a character that I wasn't that familiar with (a Jewish American woman and her family in the e ...more
