I'm so glad I'm not Harper Lee. Imagine hitting a Grand Slam at your first at-bat as a rookie: there's nowhere to go but down.
If not for the classic To Kill A Mockingbird, I think most critics would have reviewed Go Set a Watchman favorably. But anything Lee produces would have to be measured against TKAM and would almost inevitably prove wanting.

Grim, disappointing, confusing, and way more depressing.
Grim: Everyone you knew and liked from the first book is either dead or has become a racist asshole.
Disappointing: I reread To Kill a Mockingbird just before reading this, and there are several passages that are copied almost word for word. The descriptions are very pleasant, but I didn't need to read them again.
Confusing: I have no clue what the hell is going on for the last three chapters. Jean Louise and Atticus are having a complex c ...more

This was okay. I didn't like it as much as To Kill a Mocking Bird, but I did think it was pretty good.
