This was a good story. A tale of an outcast that becomes a hero. The book was not really what I expected however I enjoyed it. I can't put my finger on it but I was disappointed and it is not because I saw the movie first because that is not the case. I will see how the series goes. On to book two.

Wow this was completely different from the movie! And while I still thoroughly enjoyed it, I definitely liked the movie better. 1) The movie had female characters - yay girls can be Vikings too! 2) In the movie, Toothless was so adorable and likeable while in the book he was annoying (but not really in a bad way, like he didn't get on my nerves, he was just whiny all the time). 3) IMHO, the movie had the much better plot. But this one was still fun! 4) Hiccup was almost exactly the same in both,

We saw the movie first, and while a whiny, baby Toothless was the exact opposite of his movie counterpart, he was still just as delightful. All of it was just gross enough to also appeal to an 8-year-old without being too yucky -- snot! Poop! Gross names and rude behavior!
