I found the writing to be beautiful and highly descriptive with excellent character development. I absolutely loved learning about the Indian and Ethiopian culture. The only reason I don't give this book 5 stars is because I found the medical and surgical narratives to be far too much and too gruesome for someone without that sort of background or fascination. A bit TMI in my opinion. After a few surgical procedures were described, I ended up skipping past the rest. I didn't feel that high level ...more

This was a story that, for me, started slow, but it grew on me. I wasn't sure if I would stick it out, but because a couple of my friends had rated it sooo highly, I had to find out why they liked it.
Of course, it's in Africa, so that's a plus. But it's in East Africa, so that's a minus. ;-) The drama mounts and mounts ever so gradually, until the shocking (and I say this without exaggeration) denoument. Read it. It's worth it.

Knowing little of Ethiopia and it's history, it took me a little while to get myself situated in reading this book. I had to take it out of the library three times before it grabbed me, but it was worth it. The characters became so real to me...with all their virtues and especially because of their flaws and how they loved each other.
