I can already see why so many people have fallen in love with this book. The characters are rich and the writing is engaging. Looking forward to finishing it up tonight!

This is a clear front-runner for the Newbery. Eleven year-old Delphine "spins straw into gold" as she watches over her trying younger sisters and attempts to make the most of the bad situation they've been thrust into. Their vacation month in Oakland with the mom who walked out on them is not what they had hoped for, but disaster is trancended mostly due to Delphine's quick thinking and resourcefulness.

I think this book was about an important topic and it was so interesting to read about the Black Panthers, but I didn’t enjoy the actual story all that much. Delphine is awesomely strong but her sisters kind of annoy me and her mother was pretty terrible. Since this is a kids book, the reader kind of expects the mom to be redeemed, which she never really is. I do like the emphasis on poetry and finding your voice. I’m interested enough to read the sequel but I expected more from the book.
