[close] The Unit is a dystopian novel set in Sweden in the near future. It’s the story of Dorrit, a woman in her early fifties, who checked into the Second Reserve Bank Unit. People who are considered dispensable, i.e., childless people over a certain age who aren’t in industries that aren’t progressive are checked into The Second Reserve Unit, commonly referred to as The Unit in the book. There, they are forced to undergo experiments, drug and psychological testing, and to give their organs to people who are considered necessary until they undergo The Final Donation: surgery to harvest vital organs.
In The Unit, Dorrit finds love with a gentleman and several close friends, and has access to things she could never afford before she entered it, such as state-of-the-art fitness facilities, massages, lunches out with friends, and pedicures and manicures.
While I liked the book, and in particular the scenes between Dorrit and her friends Alice and Elsa, and Elsa’s character, I was disappointed by the ending. I had high hopes for a different outcome until the last few chapters. The book is dark and disturbing, but hard to put down.
