I really loved this book. I liked the characters and the originality of Adam and Sadie's situation. I liked that they were genuinely in love, despite the situation and the hardness of it. I liked glimpses into the background of how they met and how they got together. I liked Joe. I think he was an escape that Sadie needed. What I did not like was the way Adam treated Sadie. Certainly I understood his anger and even his explanation that he was angry that she was able to do everything he no longer I really loved this book. I liked glimpses into the background of how they met and how they got together. I liked Joe. I think he was an escape that Sadie needed. What I did not like was the way Adam treated Sadie. Certainly I understood his anger and even his explanation that he was angry that she was able to do everything he no longer could, but his treatment of her, I still felt, was inexcusable.

My other issue is how their relationship ended. I kept reading the book, my mind jumping ahead to the ending, like it does, trying to figure out how this was going to end. Sadie and Joe deserved a chance, didn't they? But she legitimately loved her husband. Was it fair for her to spend the rest of her life having to take care of him? Was there maybe a possibility that he could recover? In the beginning, he was dedicated to learning to walk again and did all his PT. Was it possible that his energy could be renewed and he could try again? I didn't think so, but I also couldn't think of any other way out. Divorce didn't seem like an option (you'd have to be pretty low to divorce your husband because he's disabled). And death didn't seem like an option. And yet the author went with death. And it came on so suddenly and without much explanation that I honestly didn't believe it. I kept waiting for the pages to say it was all a bad dream, because it seemed unrealistic that he would die because his bladder hadn't been emptied.

Though I did like Sadie's handling of the aftermath. She wanted to cry, but couldn't. Does that mean she didn't love her husband, no? I think the pages that talked about her struggling after his death are important for anyone struggling with a death to read because it explained, through someone else, that how you handle the death doesn't mean you loved the person any more or any less. Everyone grieves differently and it has no effect on how you felt about the person. I think this was a huge lesson for anyone who feels they don't grieve correctly.

The book though was unique and I liked it quite a lot, looking for any opportunity to read. I'm sure more Megan Hart books will be added to my to-read list. ...more
