What Members Thought

The Sign of the Beaver is a quick easy read which tells of the friendship between two boys, one who is Native American and one who is white. Their friendship is tentative at first because of the tension between the races but they learn to accept each others differences and respect one another.
I thought this book was interesting and would appeal to middle schoolers who are fans of the Little House on the Prairie series.

I loved this book as much as I loved The Bronze Bow and The Witch of Blackbird Pond as a child. This new edition has a nice introduction with some cautions about a few minor historical inaccuracies and politically insensitive language. Once I read the story, those issues became very insignificant compared to the humanity and compassion in this wonderful survival story.
