[close] i am so pissed at this book. i really enjoyed the first one. i quickly read A Discovery of Witches and waited patiently for the sequel. and this is what i get? i'm only gonna read the third book to finish out the series but as far as my interest goes, i'm over this trilogy.

I am once again sorry to offend everyone who loves this series 😭 I truly want to like it but I just can’t. I don’t like any of the characters. The plot seems poorly constructed. The time traveling historical stuff that should be cool is done in such a way that merely manages to annoy me. I found myself simply wishing to be done for at least 50% of the book. I might not bother with the rest of the series if I’m being honest….

At first I got a little bored being buried in all this history, with seemingly insignificant progress being made for their true objective. It literally feels like their trip in the past was only for Diana to grow as a witch and learn some more history. Diana's development as a character deepened as a result from their little timewalk (and tracing what objects were acquired and lost throughout those centuries), so I guess that little trip wasn't completely useless.

It literally feels like their trip in the past was only for Diana to grow as a witch and learn some more history. Diana's development as a character deepened as a result from their little timewalk (and tracing what objects were acquired and lost throughout those centuries), so I guess that little trip wasn't completely useless.

Diana and Matthew have ended up in Elizabethan England, hoping to track down the location of Ashmole 782, as well as find a coven who can properly teach Diana how to harness her mysterious powers as a witch. Surprise! Diana is actually a rare witch called a weaver, historically hunted for their ability to conjure their own spells, basically almost making them gods! With this latest development, what can Diana do to keep out of harm's way, in the form of jealous aristocrats and covetous creatures?

This book actually makes it hard to write a decent synopsis without giving away anything cool. Which is why I just wrote this crappy single-paragraph synopsis. If the historical part gets boring, I implore you to power through, because it might just play a role in changing the future.
