This is the second time that I have started the Wheel of Time series. There were only nine books out last time. Robert Jordan is THE epic fantasy writer. He has one story told in thirteen volumes, each volume weighing in at around 1,000 pages. Now that I have read The Eye of the World the second time, I noticed some things that I hadn't the first time through; such as the sickness that Rand experienced after inadvertently using the One Power in Whitebridge. I had forgotten that Min was introduced so early in the series.
I think my favorite character is Nyneave al'Meara. She realizes that she can wield the One Power, but doesn't really know what to do with it. She distrusts Aes Sedai (like most of the world) and is unsure if she really wants to pursue the training required to become competent in using the True Source. She cares deeply for the young people from Emond's Field and that will ultimately be the deciding factor in what she chooses to do with herself. I don't remember much of the rest of the series, so I hope that someday, Lan and she can find a way to be together.
One thing that separates this series from Terry Brooks' series is that Rand seems to be more of an act-er, rather than a react-er. He is willing to take more chances and to actually make decisions about his future based on the knowledge he has.
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
