I hadn't read this in decades, and at first I was surprised that I hand't remembered how funny it is. By the end, that was tempered, as the satire was abandoned in favor of heavy-handed observations on nature and love and absurd (not in the good sense) dialogue, where people were describing each others' characters. Too bad! But for all that, Forster was ahead of his time in his views on women.

This book fits in nicely between the classic romances of the nineteenth century and contemporary fiction. Victorian England lingers on in Cousin Charlotte's insistence on following rigid social conventions as she accompanies young Lucy Honeychurch on a tour of Italy. But an offer to trade for a room with a view sets Lucy on the path to a future beyond those restrictions.

Verbose. Forster could have said much more with much less. All in all I give this story an "okay".
