I was surprised by how much more than a tragic love story this was. Anna and Vronsky's love, expressed as passion, was contrasted with Kitty and Levin's growing devotion to each other with widely differing outcomes. But I have to wonder, was Anna's search for love any less legitimate than Levin's search for the meaning of his existence? And was it Anna's adultery or society's shunning that led to her fall? The book left me spellbound. I began to read Anna Karenina with the presumption that the book would revolve around Anna, but Tolstoy has proportionately divided the narrative, giving space to all the characters to grow and have a great bearing on the story. Anna, as a character, stands out for being an unapologetic woman going against the social norms in the Russia of 1800s.
