A brilliant debut mystery in a classic vein: Detective Cormoran Strike investigates a supermodel's suicide. After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, thelegendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends

A really nice, solid, enjoyable murder mystery. I can't say it particularly blew me away in any way, or that it was head and shoulders above other good novels in this genre, but in spite of the rather slow pace it never once bored me and the characterisations, in true JKR fashion, were excellent.

I enjoyed the book which does have entertainment value and an adequately drawn main character though Rowling is rather self-conscious in her use of the form. As a mystery novel it isn't up with the acknowledged greats in the genre. Certainly it is a long, long way behind the work of Dorothy Sayers in just about every department. Still, it was a pleasant enough read.

J. K. Rowling works her magic yet again. I picked up The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike, #1) out of curiosity: would I find traces of Harry Potter in it? Well I didn't, but I did find something just as good; an old-school, hard-boiled private eye with more complexity and appeal than one book can hold. I hope there will be many more installments in the future and that they, like the HP books, get longer as the series progresses.
