What Members Thought
So a story about ideological purity vs the impossibility of freedom under capitalism, set against a backdrop of climate catastrophe... man, the things they could come up with in the 70s!
I read this novel many years ago and while I did enjoy it this time around, I feel that it didn't really age as well as her masterwork, "The Left Hand of Darkness" nor is it written with the same creative excitement as the original Earthsea Trilogy.
Perhaps this is owing to a rather ponderous plot centred around two anti-Utopias, neither of which is satisfactory because neither can allow the fullness of human creative expression. I feel that this has become something of a truism which dates the ...more
