Oh, this was fine. But I think I'm done with Neil Gaiman. He's so... Gaiman-y. Every single one of his books has effectively the same plot and sequences of events. Also, his grasp of his characters' voices is tenuous at best. Most people sound very similar. This particularly annoyed me in the case of Richard, who does not speak English like a Scottish person even slightly. In the first chapter, he has a conversation with a few different supposedly Scottish people and not one of them phrases anyt

I liked this. But for some reason I feel like I expected to like it more...
Maybe I would have liked it more if I read it myself, though the audio was well done so I'm not sure it would have made a difference. Or maybe I was not in the mood for this type of humour when I was reading it.
It has been a while since I read anything by Gaiman, and I seem to remember really enjoying it.

Fascinating concept, loads of imagination, lots of wonderful ideas, good writing, some vaguely amusing lines, a plot ... everything that needs to be there was there.
Except that it just didn't work for me. It was slightly better than The Graveyard Book, but I had the same problems with this one - I just didn't care for any of the characters. Whether they died or lived or achieved their aims... Couldn't care less. *shrugs*

I really really loved this book. The darkness of the "fairytale" was well written and in a sci-fi sort of way, believable. I was drawn to Door as a character, not so much Richard, though. I did feel bad for him but that's about it. He seemed like the sniveling type. I liked him just a little bit, not as much as I had liked to. On the whole, I thought this was a great book- I don't read much sci-fi, but I will read Gaiman. Loved this book. Didn't want to put it down.
