Wow! This is definitely one of my favorites of the series!

An old flame of Roarke’s shows up and causes trouble for him and Eve, and I really felt for Eve in this one. Roarke pretty much bungled things in the beginning in how he dealt, or rather didn’t deal, with Magdalena.

“I had that hole in me, that empty space. I could have lived my life with it, content enough. I wasn’t an unhappy man.” He kept his eyes on hers as his thumb brushed lightly over the back of her hand. “Then, one day I felt something—a prickle at the back of my neck, a heat at the base of my spine. And standing at a memorial for the dead, I turned, and there you were.” He turned her hand over, interlocking fingers. “There you were, and it all shifted under my feet. You were everything I shouldn’t have, shouldn’t want or need. A cop for Jesus’ sake, with eyes that looked right into me.” He reached out, just a whisper of fingers on her face. And the quiet touch was somehow wildly passionate, desperately intimate. “A cop wearing a bad gray suit and a coat that didn’t even fit. From that moment, the hole inside me began to fill. I couldn’t stop it. I couldn’t stop what rooted there, or what grew.

The tears came now. He watched them drip down her cheeks, wondered if she were even aware they leaked out of her. “She was part of my life. You are my life. If I have a regret, it’s that even for an instant you could think otherwise. Or that I allowed you to.”

As for Eve’s murder case, it was definitely sick and twisted with some surprising plot twists. I actually had a hunch about the killer from early on. (view spoiler) ...more

Eve and Roarke

One of my favorite books in the series. Magdelana was huge pain in the rear and it was painful yet compelling to watch Eve and Roarke stumble their way through her.

I had an idea who the killer was pretty early on but it was still quite chilling to hear the confession at the end. Very sick.

I have been listening to this series since October pretty much straight and I think I am becoming way too immersed in this series. I like the mysteries but it’s the characters’ stories that I am reading it for more than the mysteries. In Born In Death when Mavis got so teary at the shower, I got teary. I laugh at Peabody's antics and sarcasm, swoon when Roarke makes a romantic overature and in this book when Eve’s upset about Roarke’s former lover showing up the scene my stomach was upset alon ...more

เล่มนี้เหมือนจะเดาได้ แต่เดาไม่ได้เลย ที่สำคัญห้ามspoilตัวเองโดยการไปอ่านบทหลังๆก่อนเป็นอันขาด

คดีดูไม่ซับซ้อนเลย ที่จริงเรื่องราวมันซ้อนเงื่อนกว่าที่เดาไว้เยอะเลย ส่วนตัวเวลาอ่านนิยายสอบสวน เราจะไม่ค่อยเดาเพราะอยากจะมีอารมณ์ร่วมไปกับตัวละคร ซึ่งเรื่องนี้ก็ไม่ได้เดาแหละ เล่มนี้มีประเด็นเรื่องรักเก่าของRoarkeมา เล่มอื่นๆก็มีเพราะเธอเป็นหนุ่มเนื้อหอมเหลือเกิน อดีตเยอะ คนนี้พิเศษที่Roarkeผูกพันเป็นพิเศษ อีฟจัดการปัญหาเรื่องนี้ได้เท่มาก (ฮาาา)
