This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. Looking back, for me, "Burnt Offerings" represented the first time the entire core cast was on stage. Characters have come and gone since then, but when I think of the core cast members, they'd all been introduced by this point. Asher and Nathaniel being the last to arrive.

As of "Blood Noir", all those men have been tied to Anita or Jean-Claude via the marks, well, except for Asher, who's only tied by loyalty and love. Although, I expect, if there isn't now, there eventually will be a more solid ...more

This is book #7 in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series. I am rereading the series.
The Vampire Council comes to St. Louis. Anita and Jean Claude had killed one of their members and Jean Claude is expected to take his place. Jean Claude is happy being Master of St. Louis, he doesn't want to move back to Europe, be a member of the infighting Council and worry about challenges to the death for his Council seat.
Anita continues as Lupa of the wolves. Richard is the leader having killed the old one. This is book #7 in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series. I am rereading the series.
The Vampire Council comes to St. Louis. Anita and Jean Claude had killed one of their members and Jean Claude is expected to take his place. Jean Claude is happy being Master of St. Louis, he doesn't want to move back to Europe, be a member of the infighting Council and worry about challenges to the death for his Council seat.
Anita continues as Lupa of the wolves. Richard is the leader having killed the old one. But she and Richard are no longer dating and he wants to replace her as Lupa. He is away working on his Masters.
Anita killed Gabriel, the sadistic leader of the wereleopards, leaving a vacuum in their leadership. Zane tries to continue the pimping, but he can't protect the wereleopards like Gabriel can. Stephen - a wolf that Anita has offered protection to, calls her to the hospital and asks her to protect his friend Nathaniel, a wereleopard. Out on a "job" he is gutted and nearly killed. Nathaniel likes his sex rough, but this went beyond acceptable. With Richard out of town, Anita uses her position as Lupa to insist that 3 werewolves come to the hospital and protect Stephen and Nathaniel.
Anita is forced to meet the sadistic and hateful Council members as Jean Claude's Human Servant. Anita is not much of a servant. She mouths off, insists on saving wolves and leopards that the council are abusing.
Asher is introduced in this book. He and Jean Claude were part of a triumvirate with a human woman they both loved. She was killed and Asher was tortured with holy water leaving him severely scarred. He has hated Jean Claude for centuries for not helping him when he needed him, and not being there to save their human servant. Asher is part of the Council's entourage and promises retribution by killing Anita.
Anita gets a crash course in vampire protocol, but she doesn't have the patience to play their games. She is forced to give blood to Asher. Jean Claude says she can side track Asher if she tries to seduce him instead. Doing so with an audience containing Richard makes it difficult, but she makes Asher believe that she does not find his scars a deterrant and kisses them, he is scared and relinquishes his demand that she feed him her blood. The sick female vamp who can cause her skin to rot selectively, found out that Jason (wolf) had a terrible interlude with 2 other vamps of the rotting type and he is terrified of other vamps who can do this. Richard volunteers in Jason's place, but the vamp wants the terror, and the Master of Beasts wants Richard for his own diabolical reasons. Anita tells Jason that she will stay with him and it is ruled that she cannot rot on him. Anita stays with Jason, even getting under him to maintain eye contact. She kisses him and he has an orgasm. The vamp is furious that she didn't get the terror she wanted. But she is overruled. The Master of the Beasts had hurt the Rat Were King badly. He tells Anita in Richard's hearing that the Master will pretend they are evenly matched and then push his power and try to roll Richard's mind. When this starts to happen, Anita channels Raina and puts the hurt on the Master and scares him.
Anita, Jean Claude, and Richard are all depleted from trying to keep each other and their people safe. Then some of the Council insist that JeanClaude face a challenge to his Master of St. Louis. But Asher refuses to help, the Master of the Beasts won't help, and the Traveller says no as well. They are safe for now from the Council and their evil machinations.
Richard, Anita and Jean Claude decide to work on their triumvirate and the marks to strengthen their union for the next time they are under attack.
The wereleopards recognize Anita as their queen and many of them move in with her, including Nathaniel who is beautiful and enamored with her.
Anita and Richard are still not close, but they are trying to work together. Jean Claude and Anita are close and in a sexual relationship.
Anita is getting closer and closer to the were populations. She also saved the rat king and he has pledged to support her. But she is also closer to the vampires and many of them fear her individual power much less her triumvirate powers. ...more
