I'll start with the "who of the regular cast was around" game while it is all fresh in my mind. (This is reoccuring cast that has been in more than one book. Guest stars like Musette who haven't returned are excluded.)

Of the vamps, we saw plenty of Jean-Claude, Asher, Damian, and Belle (from a distance). We were also introduced to Valentina, Bartolome, and Marme Noir (again, from a distance). With the wolves, we saw plenty of Richard, Jason, Stephen, Jamill, and Shang-Da. With the leopards we s I'll start with the "who of the regular cast was around" game while it is all fresh in my mind. With the wererats, we saw Claudia and Bobby Lee. Zerbrowski and Dolph also had prominent roles. (This was the book where both were promoted.) Plus we were introduced to Tammy.

Overall, not as good as "Narcissus in Chains" in bringing everyone on stage, although there weren't any "main" characters missing.

The book also seemed less integrated. The animating section at the beginning and the serial killer case at the end seemed "cut off" from the bulk of the book. I've heard that this was one of the longer books that ended up getting cut down. Maybe that contributed to the "cut off" feeling. Like a transition was missing. Although, that's how it would have been for Anita. The RPIT cases don't wait for Anita to rest up after the vampire drama. *g* Or, maybe that's my preference for the vampire politics showing.

Mild spoilers....

Jason was awesome in this book. We got to see him as a caretaker, as a lover, and as a potential victim of the criminal justice system. He also had one of his great heart to heart talks with Anita. I love Jason's version of pillow talk. *g* I guess I'm just a sucker for intelligent guys.

The other big relationship event was the evolution of Jean-Claude and Anita's relationship with Asher. It was good to learn more about Jean-Claude and Asher's past with Julianna and with Belle.

The vampire politics was as fascinating as ever. I enjoyed it in "Burnt Offerings" and I enjoyed it here. Yay for Jean-Claude growing beyond Belle, becoming sourdre de sang.

As in most of the Anita Blake novels so much happens. Belle Morte is angry that of all her lovers, only Jean Claude and Asher managed to leave her and succeed in their long lived Vampire lives. Assassins are in town and they are following Anita. Who has she pissed off this time? Women are being raped and torn up. Asher is afraid of Musette and Belle Morte who can takeover Musette's body. To save Asher Anita agrees to take Asher to bed with her and Jean Claude. Anita has her first ménage a trois. During the sex, Asher rolls her mind and takes a lot of her blood. Anita is weakened and ill but has to go to a crime scene. Jason has to drive her. Belle Morte manages to mark Anita from a distance as she tries to take Anita away from Jean Claude. But Anita is aware of more than Belle Morte. The Great Mother of all Vampires who has been asleep for many decades is stirring. And Anita knows she is also lycanthrope. She just doesn't know which kind. Anita has to fight off (metaphysically) both the Great Mother and Belle Morte. Dolph, the head of the preternatural cop division that Anita works for, totally loses it and is put on mandatory 2 week leave. Anita is still being ruled by the Ardeur, usually at 12 hour intervals. Musette had brought 2 children vampires with her. They are old in vampire years, but young in appearance. Musette has them "play with" brothers, one a wolf the other a leopard. Both had been abused by their father as children. The brothers fall apart. Torturing is clearly against the rules of visiting vamps. Musette, who had been told the truth of the brothers but chose not to tell the child vamps, is sent home in disgrace. The 2 child vamps ask to stay and try to make it right to the ones they didn't know they were actually torturing.
I completed my 1st reading of this book on 11/1/2010. I gave it 4 stars at that time. Anita just seems to improve with another reading. ...more

Oh hells yeah!!! That line was awesome!!!

I'm loving Jason and Micah and Zebrowski and Nathaniel...

I really hope that Anita let's go of the pain that's she been holding on to from her "first" love, cause something very beautiful can happen especially between her vamp boy toys!!!

I'm sorry to say Laurell but I thought your descriptions were too descriptive, I found myself gliding over them to get to the actual story.

I liked this book better than the previous, not that it had less of "dirty" stuff, but because the author gone back to writing about police stuff, which we missed in the last books. And all the part of having someone following her also was better, but on the other hand most of the book was about the Belle Morte's people visiting, and that took a huge chunk of the book.
