I loved this book. It was very well written and tells a story of how some non-jewish Germans may have coped with World War II. I did not feel that the transitions between Anna and Trudy were clunky, but very well marked and flowed easily into one another. I appreciated the language used as well as the lack of quotation marks. It added to the emotion of the novel.

Anna is the perfect example of "stoic German". Someone who, when past history or situations are difficult simply refuse to speak about them. As if they hadn't happened. Or the fact that they did happen, speaking of them won't change anything, and won't make anyone feel better.

This fabulous novel set me off on a WW2 reading phase that has lasted well over a year. Great story and fantastic characters. Jenna Blum is the best!
