Good god Laura Hillenbrand is a talented writer. I've never seen a book that puts you there in the middle of the action like this one. It's amazing. She can make you fascinated with a topic you thought you didn't care about (to wit, Seabiscuit).

Not a fan of WWII military history, what attracted me to this book was the prior knowledge that this was ultimately a testament to the triumph of faith and spirit over tremendous suffering. And this author knows suffering. As she’s said, trust developed between subject and author because of their common history of pain.

This was a good story. Very good. It's inspiring. Uplifting. Well written. I can't think of anything I didn't like about it. And yet...this isn't going to be one of my favorites, one of the ones that stay with me forever. It's like meeting a very attractive, smart person but the chemistry just isn't there.

It took me months to finish this book. I couldn't bear to read the POW story. The depth of research & breadth of experiences were overwhelming. It was well done but exhausting. Hillenbrand is a master at bringing facts to life.

What an interesting and trying journey this man had through life. This book is well written and moves along at a nice pace; a good introduction to war in the Pacific, as well as the travails experienced by Allied POWs at the hands of the Japanese, but written in such a manner that also allowed for the bad and heroic to be well represented. Hillenbrand seems adept at finding the really interesting stories. Can't wait for her next, though it may be a while.
