Enjoyable in places and hard going in others as similar books of its time. I found myself grinning at the part that describes mixing the potion, we all know the story. Overall a good, gothic horror read for Halloween and one I am glad to have gotten around to :-)

Wow this book was very...Victorian. Boring narrator who is passively observing the main story. Pages of nothing much happening followed by pages of break-neck action. Society morals. Hidden vices.

I feel like the mystery was super obvious but of course I already know the story. I'd like to know how I would have approached it with fresh eyes.

When I picked this book up off the shelf at the library, I was amazed at how short it was. I don't know why but I had assumed for years that it was some unwieldy thousand page tome. I read it in just a few hours and enjoyed it immensely. ...more
