I'm rounding up a bit -- but not much, as it is indeed "amazing" that a book could include so many grim, even horrendous, details of the siege of Leningrad and still hold me until its conclusion. Despite those highly realistic details, the book is not ultimately depressing. It is, rather, a quiet celebration of the essential humanity of its characters.
