The Joe Louis/Schmeling fight, child poverty, labor issues, Roscoe's boating accident, education, racism... This book deals with so many issues that it often feels like it tries to do to much. There are a few too many loose strings by the end that I was left feeling unsatisfied. The story itself is well done- Deza is a compelling character and the author is skilled at including details that bring you to that time and place, but I could have done with a few less sub-plots.
