What Members Thought
Wow, this was an incredible middle grades book (though I'm tempted to call it high middle/young YA). The characters and the setting all worked perfectly together, and the sense of creeping dread imbued every page without somehow weighing down the narrative. Read a review calling it Dickensian (as a compliment) but that almost shortchanges how engrossing this book would be for children/teens. I could see this winning the Newbery.
