What Members Thought
An excellent new fantasy world filled with imaginative magic, politics, & characters. I was quite surprised by how it sucked me in. Well narrated my Simon Vance. My only disappointment being that I finished the book on the first leg of a trip & hadn't put the second one on, so I couldn't start it immediately. Yeah, it might be long, but it's that good.

This 3 star may get dropped to 2. Actual rating is somewhere in the middle.
The pov and storyline that I actually cared about was basically non-existent.
I may come back at a later point and write a proper review.
Will I read book 2? I own it so yes, will it be as soon as I originally planed. Nooooo

My second read. Still love this book. I'm rooting for the characters to come through.
First read 2014 --Really enjoyed this one. A good start to a fantasy trilogy that I'm looking forward to continuing. Loved the characters and the set up (an emperor is murdered and his three children must 1) stay alive, 2) avenge him and 3) figure out who is out to end their family's reign, and 3) figure out what type of people they want to become. I loved that there were twists throughout the book and that the ...more

This was pretty great, slow build like most epic fantasies but then toward the end, with the world built and the two brothers coming together ... I was psyched. So many great character moments and solid plot twists.
