Having just introduced Son the Elder to the first two Pirates of the Caribbean movies, I was feeling nostalgic for this beloved author--whose work was...borrowed heavily from for those movies.

I enjoyed this quite a bit - the humor is "dry", not slapstick as you might expect from pirate movies such as POTC or Yellowbeard, so be prepared for that... but it is plentiful. The main drawback is that the only female character of note is pretty much drugged unconscious through the whole book - she's more of a plot device than an actual character. Started ok, got very confused, went a bit mad and then ended impressively but not brilliantly. This could be the main character or the book in general. There is some great stuff in here, and also some chunks that are a bit incoherent. Many of these are brought together reasonably well at the end, but there were certainly some strange times getting there.
