Another fun, quick read, although a bit predictable. The main character, Tavi, matures further & is slowly coming into his own, which is neat. The interactions with the Camin are interesting - different cultures meeting & clashing. It's nice to see that the 'good' guys aren't always perfect & often, no matter what they do, their options are limited so that they can seem pretty bad. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book. ...more

Read for a third time in about a two year span. Now that I have finished the series, I can say strongly that this is probably the best book for the Tavi story. The whole Gaius, Alera Bernard aspect is important but to me its secondary to Tavi's story and the emotional aspect of the series hits its high water mark here. ...more

Another great entry in this series. The action is furious (sorry!), although there's not as many battles in this one. The big reveal (no spoilers) is well done, and my fave characters are front and center in most of the book. The High Lord plays a bigger role in this book, and I enjoyed his parts of the book. As per usual, you get bounced from story line to story line, but it all comes together in the end. ...more
