I struggled with this one. I forgot how bleak this series is, or maybe this book is moreso than the first? When I was in the mood, it went down smooth, but when I lost the mood, the going was rough. I had a hard time dealing with just how much pain and despair the characters were consistently dealt. Still so many questions! I am loving this series, but I really think it's just one book split into three manageable volumes. The Obelisk Gate follows on seamlessly from The Fifth Season, and I'll be surprised if The Stone Sky doesn't follow immediately on from this one. Where The Fifth Season was very obviously a first volume, setting up the story, this is obviously a middle book. I roared through it though, and can't wait to get home tonight to make a start on the last book.
