There seems to be quite a complex world of politics & magic within these pages, but after 300 pages, I still couldn't care less about anyone or thing in the world. I wound up drifting off to another book days ago & still haven't felt like coming back to this one.

The prose is pretty dense, the world is quite strange & full of mysteries - too many. Only a few pages are devoted to any of a dozen different situations that are developing, each with a few to a dozen characters, none of whom seem to kn

Now that is some good fantasy reading, I loved every moment.

Thoughts to come.

I'm not going to try to summarize this book. It's been done elsewhere enough times, and I admit I'm not brave enough to try to reinvent that wheel. I read this as part of a group/buddy read; a friend had sent me a copy, and I had heard it very, very highly recommended.

It's something, all right.

Something that usually makes a fantasy or historical novel a wall-banger for me is the use of "OK" or "okay". Misuse, I should say. Believe it or not, I can be very tolerant of a lot of nonsense in a book;

A slow start, but a really strong finish! All the events that the beginning is building up to are exciting indeed! Also, I got really attached to the characters by the end. Looking forward to the next book in the series now, although I want to squeeze in a couple outside books first.

Just could not get into this one. I was drawn to a few of the characters, but I felt like I was dumped into a world with NO explanation or background. Over 150 pages in, and I still had only the vaguest idea of what was going on.

As you see I went back to this one because I couldn't stop. It was a good read, very rich in details, and strong characters. Just wish I had a scorecard to keep track of everyone! I'll probably pick up the next one.

I tried so hard to love this book - twice I tried! But ugh. It's just so monotonous. It's confusing. There are too many characters (and not in a good, Game of Thrones way). It assumes background knowledge that is just not there. So sad because I really wanted to love this series. ...more
